What AdSense’s Impression Change Means for Radio

Google is changing how AdSense counts display ad impressions beginning February 17, 2027. Instead of counting an impression when an ad downloads, Google will count it when the ad begins to render on the page. For stations using AdSense to supplement local advertising sales, that makes this a change to watch in the AdSense dashboard—and potentially in the monthly payout.

If your station uses AdSense to earn something from space your sales team hasn’t sold, the main question is pretty simple: Will it change how much money comes in? Fewer counted impressions could affect earnings, but there isn’t enough here to assume your monthly payment will drop by a particular amount, or that it will drop at all. A change in the impression count alone won’t tell you the financial impact.

The distinction is between an ad downloading and actually beginning to appear. Someone might open a story and leave while parts of the page are still loading. If an ad downloads but never begins rendering, it won’t qualify under the new method. That also doesn’t mean the visitor has to notice the ad or click it. Beginning to render is the counting point, not proof that someone paid attention.

For a station manager who mostly checks AdSense to see what the website earned, this could explain why a familiar number looks different after the transition. It wouldn’t automatically mean fewer people visited the site or that the content stopped attracting an audience. Your website traffic and your AdSense impressions measure different things, so you’ll want to look at both before deciding something is wrong.

Before the change, save a few months of AdSense earnings and impression reports alongside your website traffic numbers. Afterward, compare earnings as well as impressions, allowing for normal changes in traffic and advertiser demand. If the impression count falls but earnings remain steady, the smaller number may have little practical effect on your station. If earnings fall while traffic stays consistent, that gives you a reason to investigate further.

It’s also a good opportunity to have your website provider check whether ads are loading properly, particularly on mobile. A slow page or a delayed ad can waste an opportunity to earn revenue. But adding more ads to make up for a disappointing payment can create another problem: a website people don’t enjoy using. The extra revenue needs to justify the space and the interruption.

AdSense can be a useful addition to the business your local sales team brings in. Just give that supplemental income a closer look around the transition, especially if you’ve come to expect roughly the same payment each month. Watch what the station actually earns before changing placements or revising revenue expectations.
