Hundreds of thousands of Haitians face deportation

SACRAMENTO, Calif. — More than 350,000 Haitians nationwide, including over 14,000 in California, have now lost Temporary Protected Status, also known as TPS, after the Trump administration moved to end the program.

For many Haitian TPS holders, the end of the program means a race to find another legal pathway to stay in the U.S. — a difficult task, immigration experts said.

TPS was granted largely because of Haiti’s ongoing unrest following the 2021 assassination of its president.

Haiti remains an unstable country and hasn’t held elections since 2021, as large parts of the country remain under control by gangs.

Haitians were first granted TPS in 2010 after a devastating earthquake.
