Former footballer Cesar Azpilicueta has ended his playing career after 20 years in football. The 37-year-old Spaniard, who spent last season at Sevilla, said he no longer had the energy to devote himself fully to another season.
“It is time to stop playing football because, although I could probably still play, I did not have the energy to fully commit to an entire season,” Azpilicueta said. According to him, he now wants to spend more time with his family, play golf and enjoy life after many years of travel, matches and preparations for seasons.
Education and diploma
As BBC Sport reports, Azpilicueta earned a diploma from PFA Business School in a programme training sporting directors in global football. He received the document at Emirates Stadium. His educational achievements also include a diploma from Harvard Business School and studies in an MBA programme in business management at the Berlin School of Business and Innovation.

The footballer said that education had been important to him since childhood. Before the 2021 Champions League final against Manchester City, he was unable to take a nap as he usually did before matches, so he decided to study. That day, Azpilicueta led Chelsea onto the pitch as captain and lifted the trophy after the team’s victory.
Career at Chelsea
Azpilicueta began his career at Osasuna, later moved to Marseille, and joined Chelsea in 2012. According to him, he initially played as a right winger, while at the London club he played as a left-back, wing-back and centre-back in a three-defender formation.
He left Chelsea in 2023 but noted that the club would remain in his heart forever. Azpilicueta follows the team’s matches and hopes it will return to the proper level. Asked about possible work as a sporting director in the future, the former footballer replied, “Maybe,” but stressed that he currently needs a break from football.
