Skyrocket Radio – Give Website Visitors a Reason to Come Back

Someone clicks your station’s local news story, reads it, and leaves. Another visitor enters a contest and disappears until the next giveaway. Your website attracted both people, but did it give either one a reason to return?

We spend a lot of time encouraging radio stations to get more website traffic. That matters, but bringing someone to your website is only part of the job. Your website also needs to help that visitor discover something else worth their time, build a connection with your station, and find a reason to return.

Marketing professionals call this a funnel. The basic idea is to move people from discovering a business to taking action and eventually becoming loyal customers. For a radio station, that action might be listening online, signing up for a newsletter, downloading your app, or participating in something your station is doing. You’re building a relationship that can continue after the browser tab closes.

Your website should help visitors discover more of your station, take a useful next step, and build a habit of coming back. Here are five ways to make that happen.

    1. Treat Every Page Like a First Impression

Many visitors will land on an article, contest, or event listing without ever seeing your homepage. Each page should clearly identify your station, work well on a phone, and make the information easy to find.

Open a recent article on your phone. Can you comfortably read it without fighting through ads or popups? Is it obvious which community you serve? Can you easily find the listen button? That page may be someone’s introduction to your station.

    2. Give Visitors a Useful Next Click

When someone finishes reading, don’t leave them at a dead end. Connect the content to something else they might enjoy. A festival story can link to your community calendar. A morning show interview can point to more interviews. A football recap can lead to next week’s schedule.

Make those invitations specific. “Hear the full interview” gives someone a clearer reason to click than “Learn More.” The goal is to help visitors discover more of what brought them there.

    3. Ask for One Clear Action

Decide what you most want someone to do on each important page. That might be listening, entering a contest, or joining your newsletter. Give that action a clear invitation instead of surrounding it with competing requests.

Explain the benefit, too. “Get weekend events in your inbox every Friday” is more compelling than “Subscribe to our newsletter.” Keep the form short and test it on your phone. After a contest entry, use the confirmation page to suggest another relevant part of your station, with any newsletter signup clearly optional.

    4. Give People Something to Come Back For

A signup or app download starts a relationship. Consistent, useful content keeps it going. A weekly events guide, regular local interviews, or a dependable sports recap can become something your audience expects.

Choose a commitment your staff can maintain, then promote it with purpose. “We’ve posted the parade route and parking information” gives listeners a reason to visit. “Check out our website” leaves them wondering why they should.

    5. Look Beyond Pageviews

Traffic totals tell you only part of the story. Track meaningful actions such as newsletter signups, completed contest entries, stream starts where supported, and advertising inquiries.

If a popular events page generates few newsletter signups, review the invitation and form. If people click “Listen Live” but struggle to start playback, check the player. Remember that an app store click isn’t a confirmed download. Use each measurement for what it actually tells you.

    Don’t Forget Your Advertisers

Business owners need a useful next step, too. Your “Advertise With Us” page should explain the opportunities you offer, make contacting your team easy, and tell prospects what happens after they submit an inquiry. Then make sure someone responds promptly.

Your assignment this week: Pick one frequently visited page. Ask why people arrive, what else would help them, and which action you want them to take. Improve that path before spending more time promoting it.

We want to help your radio station grow and succeed online.  That journey starts with an amazing website that keeps visitors coming back often.  Reach out to us to start your path to online success, or schedule an appointment to see our tools in action.
