PAHO supports the strengthening of epidemiological surveillance in Haiti.

The Directorate of Epidemiology, Laboratories, and Research (DELR) of the Ministry of Public Health—supported by the Pan American Health Organization/World Health Organization (PAHO/WHO) and funded by the United Nations Multi-Partner Trust Fund, is currently conducting a mission to validate epidemiological surveillance data across Haiti’s ten departments.

This mission aims to enhance the quality, completeness, and reliability of data used to guide public health decision-making, particularly regarding the surveillance of diseases with epidemic potential, such as diarrhea/cholera and diphtheria.

Teams are conducting targeted data verification using various available sources to identify any discrepancies and make necessary corrections. The mission also serves as a forum for dialogue with departmental teams regarding the functioning of the surveillance system and contributes to capacity building.

Following their work in the Greater South region, the teams are now continuing this process in the Centre Department as part of ongoing efforts to improve the national epidemiological surveillance system.
