Defending champion Shaun Murphy has been knocked out of the British Open after a 4-2 defeat to David Gilbert in the second round.

Gilbert made a break of 117 to win the opening frame before fellow Englishman Murphy took the next two with break of 64 and 103.

However, Gilbert peeled off three more half-centuries in the next three frames to secure his place in the last 32 in Cheltenham.

New world number one Zhao Xintong held off a fightback from Welshman Daniel Wells – who had been 3-0 down – to progress 4-2.

Judd Trump rattled off breaks of 96 and 87 as he came from behind to clinch a 4-2 win over Ricky Walden.

China’s Bai Yulu narrowly lost her match against Ross Muir in a last-frame decider, having looked set for victory after a break of 59.

John Higgins edged to a 4-3 victory against Noppon Saengkham while Stan Moody beat Yao Pengcheng 4-1.

Elsewhere, Mark Selby also won a last-frame decider against Lei Peifan in the morning and then returned in the evening session to repeat the feat against Jackson Page in the third round.
