Manchester United lost 2-3 to Brighton & Hove Albion in the third round of the English League Cup at Old Trafford in Manchester, the UK. The hosts scored twice in the opening 10 minutes, but their opponents came back and scored the winner in the second half, Dawn reports.
Shea Lacey opened the scoring in the eighth minute with his first goal for United. Two minutes later, Mason Mount doubled the team’s advantage after Brighton goalkeeper Jason Steele saved a shot from Marcus Rashford.
Brighton’s comeback
In first-half stoppage time, Charalampos Kostoulas reduced the deficit after taking advantage of an error in Aiden Heaven’s marking. In the 65th minute, Pascal Gross equalized after receiving the ball from Luka Vuskovic’s lay-off and scoring from close range.
Maxim De Cuyper secured Brighton’s victory in the 70th minute, converting Kostoulas’ pass from six yards out. Late in the match, Michael Carrick brought on Bruno Fernandes and Matheus Cunha, but Manchester United failed to equalize.

Carrick’s reaction
After the match, United head coach Michael Carrick called the elimination unacceptable and took responsibility for the team’s performance. According to him, the team had the match under control but allowed their opponents to come back.
This was Manchester United’s second consecutive home defeat. Earlier, the team lost 0-1 to Manchester City in a Premier League match. United have already suffered three defeats in six matches across all competitions. Their next match will be against Fulham in the English championship.
Brighton knocked Manchester United out of a second cup competition in nine months: in January, the club won at Old Trafford in the FA Cup. According to the publication, this was United’s first home defeat in 50 years in a match in which the team had led 2-0.
