Qatari athlete Mutaz Barshim has withdrawn from the men’s high jump final at the Asian Games in Nagoya, Japan. The reason was an injury, Channel NewsAsia reported on September 27, citing the Qatar Athletics Federation.
Federation statement
The Qatar Athletics Federation said in a post on social media platform X that the injury would not allow Barshim to compete in the final. It did not provide further details on the nature of the injury.

For the three-time world champion, the withdrawal was another setback caused by health problems. In 2025, Barshim also missed the World Championships after a foot injury disrupted his preparation, although the athlete arrived in Japan with the Qatar national team.
Olympic gold
Mutaz Barshim’s best-known achievement is the gold medal at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics. He shared the high jump gold with Italian Gianmarco Tamberi after both athletes cleared 2.37 metres.
