Two-time Olympian Ciara Mageean was celebrated at the Irish National Championships at Morton on Sunday by Athletics Ireland.
Mageean, who was diagnosed with stage four bowel cancer in May 2025, was joined by more than 400 youth athletes from clubs around Ireland in a ‘Run with Ciara’ celebration.
The Portaferry runner won multiple Irish titles at Morton Stadium in a glittering career, that included two Olympic Games and a European 1500m gold in 2024.
“I can’t say thank you enough, it is the support of everyone behind me that is keeping me going,” Mageean told RTE after her lap.
“I feel truly luck to be form a community like this.”
After Rhasidat Adeleke booked her place at the upcoming European Championships by winning the 200m on Saturday, another Irish Olympian Sophie O’Sullivan prepared for the competition in Birmingham with a strong performance in the 1500m.
O’Sullivan’s winning time of 4:05.62 was enough to break the previous Irish record of her mum, Sonia, in 1995.
Andrew Coscoran won the men’s 1500m ahead of Cathal Doyle and Nick Griggs, while Cian McPhillips won the 600m.
Sarah Lavin claimed 100m hurdles gold while Ciara Neville won the women’s 100m.
Irish Olympian Nicola Tuthill won the women’s hammer throw, while Rory Michael Devaney won the men’s competition.
