Coventry without points or goals after four rounds — Sky Sports News

Coventry City remain without points or goals after four matches ahead of their away match against Nottingham Forest in the fifth Premier League round. Frank Lampard’s team faced four clubs from the current top five in the table at the start of the championship, including the two leaders away from home.

As Sky Sports News reports, Coventry’s opponents included Arsenal, Manchester City and Brighton. The outlet calls the match against Hull City the only opening fixture in which the team could have expected points.

    Problems with finishing

According to expected goals data, Coventry should have scored around four goals in the opening rounds. The xGOT metric, which assesses the quality of shots on target, raises that expected figure to five goals. Jack Rudoni had five shots and created eight chances but has not yet recorded either a goal or an assist.

In the matches against Manchester City and Hull City, opposing goalkeepers Gianluigi Donnarumma and Konstantinos Tzolakis helped their teams secure one-goal victories. In the game against Brighton, despite a heavy defeat after Taiwo Awoniyi’s red card, Bart Verbruggen made six saves.

    Next match in Nottingham

Coventry have conceded three goals from shots outside the penalty area, more than any other team in the league. Sky Sports News notes that this may indicate problems with distance when pressing, but also links the figure to the higher pace of play and the level of opposition in the Premier League.

After the defeat to Brighton, Lampard said his team conceded first after an episode that demonstrated the opponent’s class, calling it an introduction to the Premier League. Coventry’s next opponent will be Nottingham Forest, who have not yet scored in home league matches this season.
